Ideal Home

Our handsome new boy Freddie has come into us through no fault of his own, unfortunately his owners personal circumstance and health had changed dramatically which meant that long term Freddie would no longer get the exercise, care and training he needs so the heartbreaking decision was made to contact us to help.

Freddie's owners were devastated to have to rehome him, he had a rough start before they rehomed him themselves and they have done so much work with him but his needs were paramount and he is still a work in progress.

Lets start with the positives, Freddie is a super friendly boy, he can be shy/nervous with new people often resulting in a little nervous wee (bless him!) but he will happily receive the fuss he gets and it's not long till that tail starts wagging! He has a good level of obedience, absolutely loves his tennis balls, loves scentwork and has lived with cats BUT although he is good with them in the house, if outside it's fair game and he will chase them.

Freddie loves other dogs and his owner said he would be best suited to a home where there is an existing dog as he really finds confidence with a friend, settles quicker and generally more happy when there is another wagging tail about so ideally we will be looking for a home with a play mate for him.

Now on to his areas with room for improvement... Freddie isn't good on the lead, in typical spaniel style he is full of enthusiasm with excitement, keenness to sniff and get everywhere quickly so he does pull, we have started working with him but this will need continued work in his new home.

We do know Freddie does have some anxieties around getting into cars, he does travel quite happily once in the car and in his safe place of the foot well but getting into the car of his own accord will need some work, he isn't phased about traffic nor walking by cars so hopefully with continued positive association he will soon realise that car trips can be excited and lead to fun places.

Freddie's owner has said that he does have a high prey drive/is likely to chase when out and about, he also struggles with his concentration when out so whilst he has a full repertoire of tricks and commands he will willingly do in the house outside isn't so successful even armed with cheese, balls and praise. Lastly Freddie does have poor recall and will need to be worked on in his home, we have been continuing his owners long line work with him here but this again alike lead work will need to be followed through in his new home - definitely not one to be letting off in the forest... just yet anyway!!

Overall Freddie is indeed a beautiful, happy boy who just needs a committed active owner to get his training back on track, start making some progress and help him turn in to a beautifully behaved adult!
